Collections

Hang in there folks!  We’ve been brainstorming away and coming up with some new directions to take in our second year.  The most exciting:  an actual collection.  We’ve been scouring second-hand stores, popular online classifieds sites and yard sales in search of the nature-made treasures that will make our first portable Cabinet of Curiosities.  As it grows, we will put it on display and hopefully, while it is on display, it will grow with YOUR additions.  So start digging and keep in touch.

Thank you to everyone who came to our first Pub Quiz! To those of you who didn’t do as well as you would have liked to, don’t feel bad: if Portland had a Natural History Museum to go to, you would have known ALL the answers!  We had a great time because you were all so attentive and enthusiatic. The food was excellent, the Barefoot wine was plentiful, we learned some stuff in the process and we hope you did too. Enjoy your prizes, and we’ll see you at our next event!

It’s About Time.

This is a time-lapse photograph taken one evening over Mount Hood, near Portland, Oregon. As Earth rotates on its axis, the night sky appears to revolve around the North Star. Just below the North Star, a meteor is visible, leaving a diagonal trail of light. Midway through the frame, the blinking of an airplane’s wing light is the only record of human presence.

One needs only glance at a geologic timescale to understand how brief our time has been on this Earth, and already we have changed our environment in dramatic and irreversible ways. By learning the story of our planet and how we came to share it with such a rich diversity of life, we hope to better appreciate what is all around us and discover new strategies for sustaining it.

The Oregon Natural History Coalition is working to create a new kind of Natural History Museum, one that blurs the lines between science, art, and education to enrich the community and promote ecological thinking. You can help — it begins with contact.

We have spoken to a number of Portlanders about our dream for a Natural History Museum, and without exception we have received generosity, interest and support. This Museum will belong to you, neighbors, and we will need your continued support. Thanks, Portland!
